故事改編自馬特·海格同名暢銷書，講述11歲的尼古拉斯和父親住在壹起，尼古拉斯最好的夥伴是壹只小老鼠。有壹天，父親接到壹項神秘的任務，不得不離家遠行。姑媽來到家裏照顧尼古拉斯。姑媽並不喜歡他，而且把尼古拉斯媽媽留下的唯壹的玩具毀掉了。尼古拉斯和小老鼠離家出走，去尋找父親。他在路上認識了壹頭馴鹿，彼此成為了朋友。他騎著馴鹿，開始了尋找“妖精堡”的奇幻之旅。
